Gaultier 1-08 Brickey Rangers 1-12
A poor result and
a poor performance best sums up this match for us. Our injuries just
keep mounting up as we lost the services of Gags O'Connor for the
rest of the year and with Steven Hearne away we had to change our
line up for the third consecutive match. But these reasons can
hardly justify our first half performance. Looking extremely nervous
and not winning any primary possession, the Brickeys took full
advantage and took the game to us. By the midway point they had
registered four points without reply and it was turning in to a cake
walk for them. We were lucky our goal was still intact put that
wasn't to last as we conceded a goal which looked to have sealed the
victory for Brickeys. The rest of the half saw no real improvement
in our performance and we were thankful that the score was only 1-08
to 0-02 points at half time.
With nothing to
lose now we hoped to take the game to the Brickeys but we were to
concede first in the second half and now had ten points to crawl
back. We definitely upped our game after this and enjoyed a majority
share of possession and going into the last 10 minutes we trailed
1-11 to 0-08. We kept pushing forward and were awarded with a well
taken goal from Thomas Dunphy and suddenly we were right back in
this game. But try as we might we never looked like getting a second
goal and the Brickeys wrapped up a deserved victory with the last
score of the game.

We travelled to
Kilmac on Tuesday night for our playoff game against St Brendans
without the service of a number of players, as Pj Scollard, Rory
Walsh, Eddie Kirwan and Thomas Connors all had to sit this one out
with injuries. We started this game on fire and had a great goal
opportunity within the first minute only for their goalie to pull
off a great save. We continued to take the game to Brendans
and managed to go four points up before Brendans got on the score
sheet. Brendans came more into the game as the half progressed and
had managed to cut the deficit to 0-05 -0-03 at half time.
The second half
started with Brendans dictating the play and they stormed back into
it with a number of points. And only for Paul Murphy on goal we
could have found ourselves in real trouble. We seemed to have
weathered the storm and got our hands on the ball a bit more. Midway
through the half we got the break we were looking for when we were
awarded a penalty which was duly stuck away by Paul Maher, to give
us a 1-09 to 0-08. But unfortunately it wasn't to last as Brendans
orchestrated their own penalty shortly after and it was game on
again going into the last 10 minutes. We seemed to have responded
better then Brendans after that penalty and ticked off 3 points on
the trot and it looked like we had the game in the bag. But more
drama was to follow when Brendans were awarded a 21 yd free with the
last kick of the game. Thinking we were home and dry we shut off and
some how the ball ended up in the back of our net to send this game
to extra time. Full time: Gaultier 1-12 St Brendans 2-09.
We now faced two
10 minute halves of extra time and after throwing away our winning
position in normal time we had to do it all over again. The first
half showed we were still coming to terms with this drama and our
heads were not right. Brendans took full advantage of this and
slotted over two unanswered points to lead 2-11 to 1-12 at half
time.
Half time came at
the right time for us, as we could regroup and get our heads
together. Knowing this could be our last 10 minutes of football this
year we drove forward looking to retrieve this game. Thomas Dunphy
fired over a beauty and soon our heads were up again and 4 more
points gave us a 3 point lead with a few minutes remaining. Brendans
got the last score of the game but our backs performed heroics in
the remaining minutes and this time we didn't surrender the lead and
thanked our lucky stars that the scoreline read Gaultier 1-17 St
Brendans 2-12 at the end of extra time.
Praise must go to
both teams for producing a match of high drama, great scores and
fierce determination under the lights. Praise also go to our trainer
Richie Bolger for having us in great condition as were still flying
late into extra time. We now face another playoff at the same venue
next Wednesday night but that's for another day

Gaultier claim Senior Crown in Jubilee Year
Gaultier claim Senior
Camogie Crown in Jubilee Year
Gaultier 1-7 St Annes 0-8
The
County Senior Camogie crown will rest in the
Barony of Gaultier for 2008, a fitting
reward for 50 years commitment to promoting
the game in Waterford. Two weeks previously
these two rivals had ended all square after
a high scoring encounter in Ferrybank. They
returned again on Saturday and served up an
equally thrilling match, which remained in
the balance until the final whistle.
In
the first game the laurels were awarded to
the forwards of both sides but on this
occasion the defenders claimed most of the
credit. Tenacious tackling within the rules
ensured the scoreline from the first match
would not be repeated. The weather had
changed also, with the sunshine of the first
day replaced with wet conditions this time
around. The Ferrybank pitch is in excellent
condition however and coped well with the
heavy rain that fell prior to throw in.
Line-outs were also altered, St Anne’s
placed regular midfielder Charlotte Raher at
full forward. For their part Gaultier
switched Emma Hannon to corner back with
Margo Heffernan moving to top of the left, a
move that yielded rich dividend with both
players contributing greatly to the victory.
They also introduced Clare Dunne and Una
Jackman from the start, both young players
justifying their selection with excellent
performances.
On
many occasions replays turn into one-sided
encounters, not in this instance with
neither team able to extend the lead by more
then three points throughout the hour. Early
points were exchanged with Trish Jackman and
Charlotte Raher registering for their
respective teams. Gaultier were dominant for
these early stages but failed to register
scores from their abundant possession. The
defending champion’s tactic of withdrawing
an attacker and allocating a second marker
to Gaultier’s scoring menace Áine Lyng
restricted scoring opportunities. However
the challengers moved ahead when a free from
the Barony’s ace ended up in the net.
Tension
Points were again traded in a high paced
game absent the tension of the previous
match. St. Anne’s then had their best patch
with Karen Kelly pointing three placed balls
to put them ahead as we moved to the break.
The Gaultier rearguard was solid during this
period with young goalkeeper Clara Hogan
dealing assuredly with anything that came
her way. Additional she hit her teamates
accurately with astute puck outs. Converted
corner back Emma Hannon revelled as the free
defender challenging dynamic teammate Bella
Daniels for the player of the match award.
Half-time arrived with the champions ahead
by one point and satisfied having weathered
the early storm. The second thirty minutes
was even more difficult for the attacking
units. The Gaultier half back line of Jenny
O’Grady, Aileen Cummins and Catherine
O’Callaghan were simply outstanding. St
Annes attacks repeatedly coming to an end at
this solid unit.
Gaultier levelled with a free from Áine Lyng
and over the next fifteen minutes slowly
drew ahead with three points from the same
player to one for St.Anne’s. It was a war of
attrition from that stage to the final
whistle as the champions battled to hold
onto their title. The experienced heads of
Gail Fitzgerald, Criona Harrington, Sally
O’Grady and Catherine Whitty were invaluable
to the challengers.
Jenny Simpson scored an exquisite point to
narrow the margin to two points with five
minutes to go. The ball broke loose from a
melee and the skilful Simpson flicked the
ball into the air and dissected the posts
from the right wing.
Intense St Anne’s pressure finally resulted
in a twenty meter free in the dying seconds,
sharpshooter Karen Kelly, faced with a mass
defence made excellent contact with the
strike and it looked for a split second that
victory would be snatched from the jaws of
defeat. But in stepped Trish Jackman, with
lightening reflexes she deflected the
sliothar to safety as it headed for the top
right corner.
Referee Jack McGrath called time and captain
Jenny O’Grady collected the cup for a
jubilant Gaultier outfit as they claimed
their second title in three years.
Note: Gaultier will celebrate 50 years
activity at their Jubilee Dinner on November
16th, tickets are available from committee

Our Senior
Footballers lost their remaining group game against a strong Nire
team in Kilmac on a pleasant Sunday afternoon. After a good start we
allowed the Nire to settle and they began to run at our defence.
Firing over a few points we soon found ourselves 0-04 to 0-01 behind
but we kept driving forward but the scores just weren't coming.
Mid-way through the half we conceded a soft goal and this gave the
Nire men an ideal platform going into the second half leading 1-07
to 0-04.We took the game to the Nire from the start of the second
half and had reduced the deficit to 4 points before both teams
exchanged a couple of points. With 10 minutes to go we were still
only 4 points adrift and still very much in this game. But we
suffered a killer blow with 5 minutes remaining when the Nire
sneaked in for a second goal. This effectively killed off the game
and we were very disappointed to lose 2-09 to 0-08 at the end. We now
find ourselves in a playoff with St Brendans next Tuesday evening for the
remaining 1/4 final spot.

Pride of place in
the club goes to our excellent Junior panel who claimed the 2008
Eastern title against a very strong Rathgormack on Saturday
afternoon. This was a tremendous victory for this group of players
who performed brilliantly all year and have been a credit to the club
with the way they went about their business. Praise must also be
given to the team of selectors who kept things moving nicely
through out this long campaign. But it is important now to aim for
the top honours and become not only Eastern but County Champions.
And if ever there was a group of lads to bring a county trophy back
to the barony then it is this panel. Well done to all involved. Gaultier
1-08 Rathgormack 0-09
Nobody expected that it would be other than
close, and it took a speculative 54th minute
Eoin Prendergast goal to separate
traditional Gaelic strongholds Gaultier and
Rathgormack when they met in the Eastern
Junior Football (attached) Championship
Final at Fenor on Saturday afternoon last.
The decisive score gave the Barony men a
victory that didn’t appear possible, but it
was never the less fully merited in the end.
Senior players figured largely on both
sides, and it was very much apparent from a
long way out that the team who secured the
first goal of the day would prevail. Aided
by a fairly influential south-westerly
breeze blowing directly down the field,
Rathgormack virtually owned possession for
most of the opening half, but over all
didn’t take full advantage, particularly in
the first ten minutes.
As a result their interval lead of 0-5 to
0-4 looked anything but adequate to see them
through. However, Rathgormack’s
squander-mania which saw them shoot three
hopelessly bad wides in as many minutes
after the throw-in had to be seen to be
believed, and as matters transpired it was
to cost them dearly.
Gaultier, who had threatened once or twice
in the early minutes, eventually opened
their scoring account in the 9th minute
against the run of play, when full-forward
David Horgan seized his opportunity in
style. The skilful Paudie Whelan forced
equality for the first time two minutes
later from a free, and when the evergreen
Ger Power made it three points to one after
twenty minutes Rathgormack weren’t even
remotely flattered by their three points to
one lead.
Eoin Prendergast, who was to be the toast of
the Barony in the finish, cut the deficit in
the 22nd minute, and after Paudie Whelan
added two points in quick succession from
frees, another white flag for Gaultier in
the 29th minute through a Damien Tiernan
free, made it a one point game on the stoke
of half-time.
Rathgormack restarted in confident fashion.
John Kirwan obliged with the point of the
game in the 32nd minute, and when Ger Power
quickly added another for the red and green
colours, it was a worrying second half
opening for Gaultier.
But to their credit, they worked their way
back into contention, and after a Damien
Tiernan free in the 36th minute was followed
with a brace of superb Eoin Prendergast
points, the match was tied up for the second
time.
A greater all-round urgency now crept into
the proceedings and both sets of forwards
scorned chances. A terrific four man
attacking movement saw versatile Tony Bolger
restore Rathgormack’s lead in the 46th
minute, but, not to be outdone, Gaultier
worked their way back ,and it was no more
than their due when Michael Hackett set up
Shane Walsh to level matters again in the
52nd minute.
Rathgormack came close themselves soon
after, but it was Gaultier who succeeded in
getting the game’s only and indeed decisive
goal in the 54th minute. Substitute David
Kirwan was hardly a minute on the field when
a cross from the left was finished home by
Eoin Prendergast past the helpless Donal
Larkin.
This was the first time that the Barony men
had hit the front and while Rathgormack
tried might and main to retrieve the
situation they had to be content with a
further point from Stephen Power minutes
from the end ,and they might well have got
another before referee John Power signalled
the end of the contest.
For the winners none played better than Eoin
Prendergast, Paul Hogan, Colin Kehoe,
Michael Hackett, Noel Smith and Shane Walsh,
while for the losers the likes of Vinney
Murray, Kevin O’Hara, Paudie Whelan, Donie
Crotty, Ger Power and Nigel Skehan played
their hearts out.

Our Juniors got
their revenge on a De La Salle team who beat them only a week ago
and in doing so booked their place in the Eastern Final. This was a
fully deserved victory by a squad of players who were short a number
of regulars. Great credit must go to all involved who really stepped
up to the mark. Playing a great brand of football we were just to
good on the day for a very determined and difficult De La Salle
team. This victory was built on our stubborn defence and an attack
led by the veteran Damien Tiernan who showed all his years of
experience with two well taken goals. Well done to all and best of
luck in the Eastern Final in the coming weeks.

Our Juniors
suffered mixed fortunes as they defeated a good St Saviours side
before going down a week latter to De La Salle. This defeat was
irrelevant as we progress to the semi final as group winners. Our
opponents will be that very same De La Salle where we will be
looking to avenge our defeat. Throw in for this game is this
Saturday at 2:30pm in Walsh Park. Best of luck to all involved.

Our Senior
Footballers got their first win of the campaign with a hard fought
win over John Mitchell's on Saturday evening. On a desperate evening
for football, both teams served up an entertaining hour of football.
Mitchell's with the wind at their backs raced into a 3 point lead
but a well taken goal by JJ Hutchinson drew the sides level. A
second goal by Ian Power gave us a half time lead of 2-04 to 0-07.
Mitchell's started the second half strongly and reduced the margin
to a single point. We then hit our purple patch as we fired over 4
points on the trot. A goal by Mitchell's was followed by 3
unanswered points by ourselves. We were leading by 5 points going
into the closing stages but a late penalty by Mitchell's meant we
had to endure a nervous few minutes before the long whistle was
blown. Gaultier 2-11 John Mitchell's 2-09.

Our Senior
Footballers could only manage a draw in their senior championship
game against St Brendans on Sunday afternoon. With expectations high
going into this game, we struggled to find our recent good
form. The opening half saw us having the majority of possession but
a contribution of poor play and Brendans getting everyone behind the
ball, meant we found scores very hard to come by. The short whistle
saw us going in disappointed to be on level terms at 0-04 apiece. We
were hoping for a better second but unfortunately we carried on from
where we left off. A Eddie Kirwin goal midway through the half gave
us a 3 point lead but St Brendans tagged on the next 4 points
to lead by a point. Rory Walsh came up with the goods with a fine
levelling point to give us a share of the spoils. Our season now
comes down to how we fair against John Mitchell's next week. A
better performance will be needed to win this game, that's for
certain. Gaultier 1-07 St Brendans 0-10

Our Junior
footballers continued on the winning path with a good win over a
very determined Kill side on Wednesday evening. A good all round
display once again by this team with 2 goals from midfielder Shane
Walsh helping us on our way. A comfortable lead allowed the
selectors to use the full compliment of subs, which was good to see.

It
is has long been contended that goals
invariably win matches, and we certainly had
no shortage of them here, with four of the
five green flags coming during the last five
minutes. Long before the finish it became
obvious that the team capable of making the
least number of mistakes over the hour would
prevail. There was precious little between
the sides during the opening half-hour: a
well-executed goal for the city team in the
20th minute being the defining score of the
half. interval: Roanmore 1-2, Gaultier 0-4.
There was certainly no indication during the
third quarter play that a hatful of goals
would be coming up in a most dramatic
finish. We in fact continued to make most of
the running on the restart, but despite
being virtually encamped in their opponents’
half of the field we had precious little to
show for their possession. Even so, we
eventually got back on level terms eleven
minutes from the end on the strength of a
well-worked Jason Flood point.
Few
were prepared for what developed into the
final five-six minutes. The fireworks
commenced in the 55th minute when we
regained the lead with a well-orchestrated
goal from Stephen O’Keeffe. But no sooner
had the cheers from the Barony supporters
died down when Roanmore stuck the ball in
the net at the other end to restore equality
for the third time.
A
minute later Roanmore were back in front by 4 points
after we conceded a third goal. A minute
into injury time the outcome was thrown back
into the melting pot when substitute Paudie
Mahony hit Gaultier’s second goal to slash
the differential to the minimum. Alas, time
had run out for us, and hard though we
tried the equaliser never came as Roanmore
held on for a most unexpected but in the end
deserved 3-4 to 2-6 victory.

thank you to all players and selectors for
their effort this year and commiseration on
just falling short.

half points from Noel Smyth helped us into a slender 0-10 : 1-03
lead at half time. A complete turn around in the second half saw us

Our senior
footballers opened their campaign on Friday night against
Stradbally. Stradbally opened the scoring early on before we settled
into the game. Once we did we took a strangle hold on the game and
began putting scores on the board. With our forwards and midfielders
running at the Stradbally backs, we were able to win frees which
were converted. After 20 min we had raced into a 0-06:0-01 lead
which included a wonderful point by Fly Fitzgerald. Unfortunately
Stradbally were awarded a penalty which they converted and then
kicked 3 unanswered points to go in at the break a point up. 0-06 to
1-04. Stradbally pointed another 3 points in the opening period
before Fly Fitzgerald pointed a free to leave a goal between the
sides. Another point for Stradbally pushed them 4 points ahead
before Ray Hearne was upended in the box to win a penalty. Paul
Maher coolly slotted home to put us just a point behind with 7
minutes remaining. Unfortunately in a titanic end we were unable to
get the levelling score. Great credit must go to the panel for the
way they performed and fought to the very end. Better days lie ahead

Our minor team
impressed in their opening fixture against Tramore. Running out
convincing winners on a scoreline of 3-14 to 0-01. The game was over
as a contest at half time after we found the net 3 times in the
opening 30 minutes. Leading 3-07 to 0-01 at half time we had the
hard work done. We continued to press forward in the second half and
tagged on 7 more points. It was an impressive performance by the
whole team and it bodes well for the future.

Senior Footballers
lose their second league game of the season to county champions,
Ballinacourty, on a score line of 2-07
t0 2-20. An amazing score line considering we were leading with
10min of the game remaining. A very positive opening half was wiped
out thru a combination of Ballinacourty's play and a lot of sore
heads on our part.

Senior Footballers
lose opening game of the season to The Nire on a score line of 4-07
t0 1-07. A dreadful opening half saw us concede 4 early goals but a
major improvement in the second half saw us restrict The Nire to a
solitary point. Unfortunately we couldn't get the scores to narrow
the gap but we can take positives from the 2nd half performance.
