Chairmans New Year Message PDF Print E-mail
Written by The Gaffer

A Chara,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the club committee for electing me into office as Chairman of Cill Nàile Brian Borús for 2008. It’s an honour to hold this position within the club, particularly so in the year when we will celebrate 120 years of the clubs existence.

I would like to thank those who have held this position over the last ten years or so. Their hard work and indeed that of all club officials during our recent grounds development, has helped put in place structures and facilities which will make things a little easier for me during my term in office. Credit must go to all involved. However, there is always room for improvement and over the next few months we will be taking a close look at how improvements can be made to our facilities, primarily to help prepare our teams for competition.

2007 has been one of our more successful years in recent times with our senior team winning the Intermediate Championship, and our ladies teams wining silverware at all levels. The success of our U14 girls in the All Ireland Féile na nÓg competition is particularly noteworthy. Credit must also go to the U12 and minor teams on reaching the Division 1 and Championship finals respectively. Our junior team competed well in the league and narrowly missed out on the league final. They were also beaten by a late goal in the championship by Roslea who went on to win the competition. Thanks to all those who took charge of teams over the past year and we look forward to your continued assistance.

Looking ahead to 2008, the main priority on the playing field must lie with our senior team and their attempt to regain promotion to division 1. Having played at this level in 2005 our seniors competed well against the top teams in the county and were unlucky to lose division 1 status on the last day of the season. With young blood breaking through into the senior ranks coupled with the more experienced campaigners, this team is more than capable of holding their own at the top level. The big obstacle is getting there, but with continued commitment from all players I believe this obstacle can be overcome in the year ahead.

Socially, 2008 promises to be one of the biggest years in the clubs history. Preparations are well underway for our Gala Ball which will take place in the Slieve Russell Hotel on 1st November. This event will bring together Brian Borus both young and old to celebrate 120 years since the first factual evidence of our clubs existence. We would encourage people from near and far who have any connections with the club to attend this historic event as it will be an excellent opportunity for friends, family and old team mates to come together to celebrate and look back at the highs and indeed lows of the past 120 years.

On the financial side of things, it is evident at the end of each year that the running costs of the club continue to rise. It is important that rising costs are met with adequate income. Our three main sources of income during the year are our annual Féile, the weekly lotto and sponsorship from local businesses. Féile 2007 was one or our most successful to date. Credit must go to the entire community for supporting all events in such large numbers. Our lotto continues to do reasonably well with sales increasing significantly as the jackpot goes up each week. I would encourage all players, both ladies and men, and all club members to make the effort to be in the lotto each week. Thanks to all those who continue to buy and sell lottos. Thanks to all those who have sponsored various teams, club gear and advertising signs. Your generosity is very much appreciated, as without your help, insuffient funds would be a detriment to our club and in particular to our teams.

Our excellent website continues to attract interest. I would encourage club members to keep an eye on it to stay in touch with news and events within the club. Please feel free to post your views and comments on our guest book. Finally, on behalf of Cill Nàile Brian Borús, I would like to wish each of you a happy and prosperous new year and we will look forward to your continued support in 2008 with the hope that it will bring continued success both on and off the field.

In the final league game of the U21s Kinawley were beaten by 4 points by Teemore. Kinawley got off to a good start with an early Fran Keenan goal, they had the better of the first half & were unfortunate to only lead by a point at half time after Teemore scored a late goal. Second half saw Teemore  push ahead & score 1-4 in first 10 minutes. Kinawley finished stronger but it was always an uphill struggle. A fantastic point blank save by young 'keeper Niall Melanaphy kept Kinawleys hopes alive and they were within 2 points going into last 5 minutes. But Teemore scored a freak goal from a free that went over the goalkeepers head & a point from play to move into the quarter final fixture with St Pats.  Kinawleys scorers were Fran Keenan 1-1, Ciaran Melanaphy 0-4, Ciaran Crudden 0-3, Sean Crudden 0-1, Sean McManus 0-1.
