U16 A League Final

Kinawley 5-13
St. Patrick's 2-03

A beautiful evening in St. Molaise Park, Irvinestown saw the unveiling of the kindly donated Fergus McQuillan Perpetual Cup on Saturday 1st September.  This A final was the showpiece of the day, the biggest winners on the day was ladies football and a credit too all the girls who were involved, over 100 girls played exciting and skillful football over the course of the day in the three finals and it was a delight too watch.

The A final was eagerly awaited and there was an action packed start too the game with both teams playing fast football from the throw-in.  Within the first fifteen minutes the spectators were treated to five goals blitz three from Kinawley and two from St. Patrickís before it was clear which team was going to find their stride and settle into the game.  Kinawley reigning champions were going for five in a row, the St. Patís ladies were out to stop them and with recent form they were proving to be a very strong force.

From the kick off play swung from end too end both sets of players giving away possession a hind off nerves by both teams.  Six minutes into the game, it was Kinawley who register the first score, linking play up the wing found Kinawleyís corner forward Lisa Maguire who played a pass into full-forward Jolene Martin and one on one with the goalie blasted too the net.  The resulting kick out was won by Kinawley number 9 Emma Murphy and produced a replica of the first goal, Maguire to Martin to back of the net.  Kinawley looked too be in the driving seat as the industrial Maguire scored a great point from play.  St. Pat defense were finding it very difficult too deal with the fast forward and incurred a number of frees, one in which Emma Murphy took sending in a high ball from over 30yards out dropping to the net.  It was starting too look like one-way traffic as St. Patrick had yet too score up till now Dannie McDermott had been quiet but came one of  her powerful solo runs resulting in a great goal and Donaghís first score.  Two minutes later and a mistake on the Kinawley goal line meant that Tessa Cadden free kick found the net and raised a green flag.  An eventful first fifteen minutes, a goal and a point separated the teams a battle ahead anticipated however it failed to ignite.  The Brian Boruís from Kinawley upped their game in the final quarter of the first half scoring 2-06 without reply.  The brilliant Lisa Maguire pointed 3 times (2 frees) and full-forward ëMaggieí was having a great afternoon netting a further two more goals.  Kinawley girls were working very hard all over the field Teresa Doogan registering two great points as too did mid-field player Zoe Leonard.  St. Patrick did manage to score a point from the boot of Cadden after the referee awarded a free deep into injury time.  Half time score reading Kinawley 5-07 St. Patrickís 2-01.

The second Kinawley dominance took over and they controlled the game from half back line, there was great work from Captain Micheala Murphy, Joanne Doonan scoring two points from play and as the half progressed the u14 All-Ireland winning captain Roisin OíReilly came more and more into the game too finish strong.  St. Patís goalkeeper made some great saves too deny Kinawley and give her team a glimmer of hope.  There were points from Maguire and Martin before Leonard made a strong solo run from mid-field finishing with a point which was the of the game.  Donagh could only manage two point in the second half, a poor return for their efforts.  They will be disappointed with the performance as a lot more was expected.  Kinawleyís flowing passing and first time ball gave them the space too take their chances and that they did running out convincing winners at the end.
