In the end, this was an emphatic victory for Kinawley in this local derby clash but the Brian Boru's weren't all that comfortable until the final quarter of the contest. Derrylin had put up a sturdy effort but over the final passage of play, the O'Connell's effort faltered and two goals for Kinawley ensured that their was in the end, a sizeable gap separating the teams.
It had all been different over the opening 25 minutes or so with the contest well balanced, the teams level on three points each with the half-time whistle beckoning. Kinawley then were given a decisive lift with the first of what turned out to be a three goal haul and they never looked back after that. The introduction of Tomas Corrigan was also to inject an extra dash into the Kinawley second half team performance and in the end they were to be well worth their second straight win of the season. Promising days ahead for them. For the winners, Niall Bogue was to be a first rate organiser of the defence, which generally had the measure of the Derrylin forward line and another to do well for them was Bernard McHugh and the aforementioned Corrigan. For Derrylin, their best defenders were Eamon Gunn and Kevin McCusker with Cahir Shannon perhaps their most consistent player up front but the goals they conceded finally killed off the Derrylin resolution. Very little by the way of scoring in the first quarter, Kinawley being particularly slow to get off the mark, their first score not arriving until the game was well into the middle stages of the half, Shaun Doherty picking off a placed kick. Derrylin were to have early points from Cahir Shannon and Donal McAvinue and the sides were tied at three each with 25 minutes on the clock. Kinawley then made a key breakthrough with their first goal, a high shot spinning down off the upright and Ciaran Melanophy mopped up the break and slotted home. That score boosted Kinawley into a four point interval lead and they were not to be headed thereafter. Corrigan was fouled close in on goal and the resulting penalty was driven home by Doherty to widen the gap and Derrylin's prospects slipped away. The O'Connell's did pick off occasional points but the goal they needed to give them a realistic recovery chance never shaped up. And in fact when another goal did arrive, it fell to the now assured Kinawley team, Ciaran Melanophy picking up his second of the day. Referee: Paul Campbell Tempo.
