After much delay, Kinawley eventually got in a game in the Ulster League but it was not to be a successful debut as the Brian Boru's slipped to a four point defeat at the hands of visiting Derry club Lavey.
It was a hesitant showing in the first half, which undermined the Kinawley effort as they found themselves put on the back foot by a sharper opposition. Lavey strode four points clear with a snappy initial burst before Kinawley managed to register their first score, a point tagged on by half forward Kevin Martin at the start of the second quarter. It was still Lavey, however, who held the commanding edge and they shot four more points prior to the interval, Kinawley again restricted to just a single point in response. So, at the break the Fermanagh side were six points adrift on a scoreline of eight to two and with Lavey being well served by players of the calibre of county defender Kevin McCloy operating at centre half-back and full forward Michael McCormack, the task facing Kinawley on the changeover was a stiff one. But the somewhat makeshift Kinawley side, clearly missing the input of absent county players, Shaun Doherty and Niall Bogue, were to produce a lively second half display, which saw them outshoot the opposition by six scores to four. But despite the gritty form of the home side, they were always chasing the contest and they never really looked convincing enough to suggest that they would be able to completely cut down the deficit. |
