The senior team got their league campaign off to a winning start with an away win over Aughdrumsee. Tomas Corrigan impressed in the forward line and finished the day with 5 points. Other scores on the day came from Sean Doc, Sean (dubh) Leonard and Matthew Drumm.
Home team Aughadrumsee put in an enterprising enough first-half effort and they were to hold a more fancied Kinawley team to level scores at the interval, the teams tied on three points each. But that was as good as it got for Aughadrumsee and in the second half they gradually fell away, eventually finishing well adrift of a Kinawley team who will be aiming to be among the promotion contenders. Kinawley introduced youthful Tomas Corrigan, who was starting his first outing at senior level and he made his presence felt with a quota of scores, five in all, which was a major contribution to his team's tally. The opening half saw both sets of defences generally hold the upper hand and scores were sluggish in coming. Corrigan was on target twice for his side, Shaun Doherty adding a single with Andy Mulligan's brace for Aughadrumsee and a single from a Kevin Cosgrove free being the answer for the home squad. The second half, however, was to see the Aughadrumsee forward line totally policed by the Kinawley defence, which offered them very little scope indeed and the home side were to add just one more point to their total, Andy Mulligan pointing around the three-quarter mark. At the other end, Kinawley were to be more prolific and they eased themselves steadily into what in the end became a fairly comfortable lead. The promising Corrigan was again to the fore with a trio of points and other scores came from Mark Monaghan and Kevin Martin. Close to the end, it was the turn of Kinawley defenders to unexpectedly get their names on the score sheet, Brendan McHugh from his wing half-back slot and Niall Bogue from even further back in the full-back line both notching scores. For the winners, who did take a little time to settle down to the business in hand, Brendan McHugh was a strong figure in the half-back line, Mark Cornyn was solid at corner back and Tomas Corrigan was sharpest in the attack. |
