A second half goal by Kevin Martin along with a penalty save from Ritchie Donohoe helped Kinawley to a well deserved win over neighbours Derrylin on Sunday afternoon.
Kinawley master Derrylin From the Fermanagh Herald
KINAWLEY ............... 1-12 DERRYLIN ............... 1-6 Kinawley were the team who had much the greater staying power in this derby clash and they duly swept their way to a convincing six point success over the O'Connells. It was a repeat of their recent championship win over their closest neighbours in what was a testy affair, Derrylin finishing the 60 minutes with a depleted lineout. Shaun Doherty had a major impact on the game in the opening half as he shot a four point tally for the Brian Boru's with other scores tacked on by Kevin Martin and John McHugh. But the main score of the half was the goal that was scored by Derrylin. They had already picked up points from Donal McAvinue, Mark Murphy and Barry Murray to trail by a point but then on 20 minutes they snatched the lead. Kinawley had raided forward and one of their defenders had gone up in support but the movement was broken up and Derrylin made a rapid counter raid into the unoccupied space in the heart of the Kinawley back line. Ryan Brown was the O'Connell's player who was on the end of the fast probe and in a one-on-one with goalkeeper Ritchie Donohue he steered home his chance. Kinawley, however, were able to answer this with two points in the minutes leading up to the break from McHugh and Doherty, leaving the sides level at the interval. Derrylin made a snappy enough restart with a couple of points from Donal McAvinue but that was as good as it got for them. Kinawley hit back in confident style and a goal from Kevin Martin had them back in the driving seat. They were two points ahead but then had one more anxious moment before the game swung decisively their way. Derrylin were awarded a penalty but the kick was saved smartly by Donohue and with that the last chance disappeared for Derrylin who faded out of the picture in the last spell. Second half points for Kinawley had come from Tomas Corrigan and the two Sean Leonards. A sound win for Kinawley and it will put them in extra heart for their upcoming intermediate final assignment.
